Welcome to Class 1
Flying high in class 1!
In Year 1 we enjoyed dressing up as our favourite superhero. We had a fun day acting our a real life comic strip, designing, building and destroying evil villain's houses and eating rocket fuel cakes and burning off some of our energy playing superhero games. We also learned how to fly! Our day really inspired our writing over the following weeks.
In year 1 we have been learning the importance of a good and balanced diet. We have been investigating why fruit and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet, are a good sugar swap and why they are important as part of our 5 a day. We enjoyed tasting some new foods and designing, making and eating a healthy bagel face YUM!
Mr Doyle is our Chair of Governors and a first aid trainer. He helped us learn that not all superheroes wear capes and taught us all about what a first aider does. We learned how to put a bandage on our cuts and grazes, what to do if we think someone has a head injury and how to check each others temperature. We especially enjoyed learning how to use the defibrillator and shouting "STAND BACK!" Back in class we enjoyed making posters and writing about what we had experienced.
Here we are having fun investigating aerial maps. We pretended to be reporters reporting on the sighting of a superhero in Whitehaven. We did not know where he was hiding so we had to identify lots of different places on our aerial map to see if he was hiding there? We also enjoyed making our own aerial map and then following on from this we drew our own aerial map of our classroom. We then investigated different abstract maps and looked at the differences between the two types of maps.
Here we are enjoying one of our science lessons. Here we were investigating one of our 5 senses........ hearing. Some of us went on a listening walk where we heard some loud and quiet noises such as cars, lorries, birds and the wind. Some of us investigated what would make the best ear defenders and we worked independently to investigate all the different materials. We found that a piece of sponge inside a cup made the best ear defenders. Paper and tin foil made the worst ear defenders. We also enjoyed investigating how sound waves can travel along a piece of string- we loved making a string and paper cup telephone! Finally we looked at what it would be like if we could not hear and we learned some makaton so we could communicate with each other.
Here we are in English. We enjoyed learning how to make sure we wash all the germs off our hands and how to make fruit kebabs. We then wrote a set of instructions informing other how to do it too. We especially enjoyed using 'bossy verbs' and bossing each other about!!!!
